Paragraph Format

This tool window is used to display and modify paragraph format. It is available when you are working with a rich text editor. It is invoked by the Format|Paragraph Format menu command.
Style
Character style. The remaining settings in the window are used to modify basic formatting determined by the style. The list of styles can be modified by the Text Formatting Styles command in the Settings menu.
The remaining properties are divided into several tabs:

Text form

Item
Description
Space before paragraph
The size of the space before the paragraph (above).
Space after paragraph
The size of the space after the paragraph (beneath).
First line indent
Indentation of the first line with respect to the left margin of the paragraph (not the page margin). Positive values shift the line to the right while negative values shift it to the left.
Left indent
Indentation of the left margin of the paragraph with respect to the margin of the page or table cell in which the text is located.
Right indent
Indentation of the right margin of the paragraph with respect to the margin of the page or table cell in which the text is located.
All indents can be modified also on the ruler in a rich text editor.
Line spacing
Spacing between lines in the paragraph. The following options are available:
Simple
the line size is determined by the highest character. No additional space is inserted between lines.
1.5 line
a space equal to half a line is inserted between lines.
Double
a space equal to one line is inserted between lines.
At least
the line size is determined by the preset value; however, if the highest character on the line is higher, the line size is set according to this character.
Exactly
the line size is determined by the preset value; if a higher character occurs on the line, it is cropped (partially displayed).
Multiplies
the line size is determined as a multiple of the height of the highest character on the line.
Align left
Aligns rows of the paragraph to the left margin.
Center
Centers rows of the paragraph.
Align right
Aligns rows of the paragraph to the right margin.
Justify
Aligns the paragraph to both left and right margins by enlarging spaces between words.
Tab stops
A list of tab stop positions in the paragraph. Alternatively, you can define them using the ruler in a rich text editor.
Position
Tab stop position with respect to the left margin of the page.
Alignment
Alignment of text indented by the tabulator with respect to the tab stop:
Left
the text starts (has its left end) at the tab stop (the standard case)
Center
the text is centered on the tab stop
Right
the text ends at the tab stop (that is, its right end is aligned to the tab stop)
Decimal
the first decimal separator (point or comma) in the text is aligned to the tab stop. If no decimal separator is present in the text, it is aligned to the right. (Convenient for the alignment of numbers.)
Leading sign
The sign displayed in the space between the text indented by a tabulator and the preceding text.
(Not implemented yet).

Paging

Item
Description
Paragraph at new page
A page break is inserted before the paragraph. The remainder of the preceding page is left empty, and the paragraph always starts on a new page.
Useful, for example, for main headings.
Orphan/widow prevention
Prevents page breaks right after the first or right before the last line of the paragraph resulting in a single row from the paragraph being left alone on the page.
Keep paragraph together
Prevents page breaks inside paragraphs. Should a page break occur inside the paragraph, the entire paragraph is moved to the next page.
Useful, for example, for headings.
Keep with next paragraph
Prevents the paragraph from being the last one on the page. Should this happen, the paragraph is moved to the next page.
Useful for headings to make sure they are not orphaned at the bottom of the page.
Keep with previous paragraph
Prevents the paragraph from being the first one on the page. Should this happen, an extra paragraph from the preceding page is moved to the page concerned.
Useful for summary rows to make sure they are not separated from the actual list.

Frame

Allows you to define paragraph frames (borders). Buttons on the left represent individual frames. The fields on the right correspond to the buttons pressed on the left. The All frames button allows you to select all frames whereas the No frame button allows you to cancel all frames.
In order to modify a particular frame you need to first select the paragraph sides that should be modified and then modify the respective values. You can also select values first, and check the lock setting box. If the box is checked, the frame values specified on the right are immediately applied when you select a side of the paragraph.
Meaning of the values for frame setting:
Item
Description
Color
Determines the color of the frame line. It is defined by the color editor.
Style
Frame appearance: normal or double line.
Width
Width of the frame line.
From text
Distance of the frame line from the text.
In addition, you can also set the background – choose between solid color and color with a pattern (then you select one of the patterns) . If you select solid color, a color editor appears, whereas if you select pattern, the pattern color and the background color have to be selected separately.
